On 05/10/17, 35 year old inmate Samuel Scott Stallions, of Metropolis, was being returned from a court appearance by the Pope County Sheriff's Office. Stallions was wearing jail issued clothing and restraints when he was removed from the vehicle to be taken into the Massac County Detention Center. Stallions broke away and attempted to flee. Deputies, along with Officers with the Metropolis Police Department began to pursue Stallions.Stallions was surrounded and attempted to flee a few blocks from the Detention Center. Stallions was subdued by use of a tazer and taken into custody. Stallions was returned to the Massac County Detention Center and charged with Escape. Stallions was being returned from Pope County Court where he was just given credit for time served and to be released from their custody. Stallions was being returned to the Detention Center on a Massac County warrant.

William "Virgil" Hargan was last seen on 01/02/17 at around 3:30 P.M. in Metropolis. Virgil suffers from Dementia. It is beleived he may have been in the Paducah area at some point. He was last wearing blue jeans, blue/green plaid shirt, loafers and a red "Donald Trump" ball cap. He was driving a white 4 door Chevrolet Impala with Illinois registration P587041. On Sunday, December 18, 2016, at approximately 5:25 P.M., the Massac County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call from Allan Stephens while at his home located at 6577 Old Marion Road, Metropolis, Illinois. Mr. Stephens advised he had just shot his wife. A Massac County Deputy arrived shortly thereafter and confirmed a female victim in the home with a gunshot wound. Mr. Stephens was taken into custody at approximately 5:43 P.M.
The Illinois State Police (ISP) Zone 7 Investigations and ISP Crime Scene Investigations were called in to assist with the investigation. The victim, identified as Mr. Stephens’ wife, was Deborah D. Stephens, a 59 year old female of Metropolis, Illinois. Mrs. Stephens was pronounce dead at the home by the Massac County Coroner’s Office. Involved agencies included Massac County Sheriff’s Department, Massac County Coroner’s Office, Metropolis Police Department, ISP Zone 7 Investigations, and ISP Crime Scene Investigations. Mr. Stephens, a 61 year old male of Metropolis, Illinois (pictured below) is being held at the Massac County Jail on a First Degree Murder Charge. No further information is being released at this time, and any additional information will come from the Massac County State’s Attorney’s Office. ![]() On 06/15/16 A Deputy stopped to check a vehicle located near the bike trail at the end of Belgrade Rd. The Deputy observed 53 year old Darrell McCoy, of Metropolis, naked in the vehicle. While the Deputy was speaking with McCoy, he noticed several pills, not in a container, in plain sight. The Deputy also located a substance that tested positive for Methamphetamine. McCoy was arrested and charged with Possession of Methamphetamine. Additional charges are pending after testing is completed on the pills. On April 30, 2016 two men came into Hoyer's Outdoor Equipment. The two purchased two chainsaws totaling over $1,100. The two were identified as 51 year old Darrell Keeling and 18 year old Travis Whitehair. The check was written on a closed account of Travis Whitehair. Keeling, shown on the left, has ties to Brookport and Paducah. Whitehair is from Paducah. A warrant was issued in Massac County for Travis Whitehair for Theft and Deceptive Practice. A warrant was also issued for Keeling in Massac County for Theft and Deceptive Practice. Keeling has another outstanding warrant out of Massac County for Failure to Appear on a separate charge of Deceptive Practice. The two are also being sought by the McCracken County Sheriff's Department for similar offenses.
In November 2015 Deputies began investigating a video that had been discovered. The video showed a female minor in a sexual act with a male. Investigators were able to determine that the minor in the video was a 14 year old female. Investigators were also able to determine that the male in the video was 25 year old Cesar Mounts of Metropolis. It was later determined that the video was filmed by Mounts at a residence in Metropolis. Mounts was located in McCracken County. Mounts was arrested and charged with Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault and Possession of Child Pornography. The Massac County Sheriff's Office was assisted in the investigation by the McCracken County Sheriff's Department.

Short was apprehended in the area of 6th & Broadway and taken back to the Massac County Detention Center. On 06/07/16 at around 11:45 A.M. 22 year old Odeisha Short escaped from a Deputy while being transported from Court. Short fled the area of the Detention Center and fled west. Short took off jail issued yellow clothing and discarded it. Short was last seen wearing white underwear in the 7th & Broadway area. Short was being held at the Massac County Detention Center on an Indiana warrant for Battery by Bodily Waste. ![]() On 05/28/16 at around 3:00 A.M. Deputies responded to the 6300 block of South US HWY 45. A homeowner discovered a male breaking into vehicle's at his residence. Deputies located 21 year old Robert Barger, who is homeless, nearby. Deputies located items taken out of the caller's vehicle. Barger was arrested and lodged at the Massac County Detention Center. Deputies also located items in Barger's possession that were not taken from the caller's vehicle. On 05/29/16 Deputies followed up and discovered that the items came from vehicles in the 6700 and 6500 blocks of US HWY 45 South. A resident in the 1900 block of Deer Run Rd. reported items missing from an outbuilding. Items taken and recovered include a computer, cell phone and chargers, candy and money. Barger was charged with Burglary and Theft. Additional charges are pending. ![]() In the early morning hours of 04/28/16, a resident of a Spruce Dr. contacted the Massac County Sheriff's Office. The resident reported that he woke up to his garage door opening. He had located a male inside of his garage. The male left the area in an unknown vehicle after being discovered. It was believed that the person had entered an unlocked vehicle and used a garage door opener to enter the garage. A hunting knife was taken from the vehicle. It was later discovered that a similar incident had occurred at a resident on Cedar Ln. where a checkbook was discovered missing. An investigation began and led Deputies to a residence on East 17th St. in Metropolis. Deputies located 20 year old John Jaco of Metropolis. Deputies located the stolen knife and checkbook from the Cedar Ln. subdivision. John Jaco was arrested and charged with Residential Burglary and Burglary to Motor Vehicle. Deputies also located other items believed to have been stolen from Cedar Ln. but have yet to discover where the property came from. Deputies are asking residents of the Cedar Ln. subdivision to contact the Massac County Sheriff's Office if they are missing any items they believe have been stolen. |
