Starting August 1, 2018 the Massac County Sheriffs Office will place 5 Automated External Defibrillator’s in five Massac County squad cars. This will be a pilot program that will hopefully lead to installing AED’s in all squads within the next year. The AED’s are just another tool the deputy will have available to them to assist EMS and First responders in Massac County. The first 5 AED’s costing $4,000 have been purchased with funds from the LESO program, additional AED’s hopefully can be purchased within the next year using other sources and donations. Deputies have been going through training for the past month on the operation of the AED’s and should be ready by August 1.
Defibrillators are devices that restore a normal heartbeat by sending an electric pulse or shock to the heart. They are used to prevent or correct an arrhythmia, a heartbeat that is uneven or that is too slow or too fast. Defibrillators can also restore the heart’s beating if the heart suddenly stops.
